Dog Blog

Those of you who know me know that I am nuts about dogs.  Those of you who don’t, only need to spend a minute looking at my work to come to the conclusion that anyone who makes jewelry for dog lovers must have at least a preoccupation with the loyal, loveable canine.  The truth is I can’t imagine my life without a dog or two in it.

My line of dog lovers jewelry allows me to share my passion with other dog lovers who visit my booth art shows.  Just this past weekend I was an exhibitor at the Calabasas Art Festival (a very high end, beautiful show!) and talked more about dogs with show patrons than about my jewelry!  I met dozens of wonderful canines and heard stories about their lives.  Just like proud parents, we pulled up photos of our four legged fur babies on our smart phones to admire or share a laugh.  People love to talk about their dogs, maybe even more than about their kids!

So, I decided to start a “Dog Blog” page on my site, and will be posting photos and stories, of and about some of the dogs I meet at art shows. In fact, my first dog has been profiled, meet Darby!

For me, this quote sums it up about including a dog in your life: “Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.” ~ Roger Caras

The Grand Staircase

bryce01-2013

It’s spring break and here I sit in my new travel trailer in the heart of the Grand Staircase, Zion, Utah.  This breathtaking canyon is even more incredible than I remember it from my last visit over thirty years ago. I learned today that Bryce Canyon, Zion and the Grand Canyon make up The Grand Staircase, a geologic “staircase” with Bryce at the top, then Zion and finally, the Grand Canyon at the bottom.  Through millions of years of water erosion, the process of freezing and thawing, and the layers of various rock types, the resulting cliffs, slopes and terraces descend over 7,000 feet over a 150 mile distance.  Each area revealing colorful layers of earth, the oldest of which are found in the Grand Canyon at 230 million years old. Here’s a link to more on The Grand Staircase.

Emerald Pools, Zion, Utah

What really impresses me outside of the astounding natural beauty of Zion, is how the NPS appears to be taking care of this national treasure.  Access into the Canyon is only aboard shuttle buses, which are part of a well designed transportation system making it very easy to get around the park and the town of Springdale, at the west entrance to the park. The result creates an uncluttered, noise and exhaust free environment in which to enjoy the splendor that is Zion. I spent Easter day hiking to the Narrows, Weeping Rock and the Emerald Pools.  My feet and back were spent after walking close to seven miles!  But, so worth it!

Speaking of Springdale, did I mention the abundance of rock shops here?  Utah is simply a rock hound’s paradise and it was good to refresh my memory with names and characteristics of some of the common minerals of the west. I had a great time  exploring them and searching for new stones for my jewelry.   Only one shop had cut cabochons, but I found the prices to be fair so I stocked up.

Trail view to Emerald Pools, Zion, Utah

The colors of the earth are so warm and wonderful in all three parks.  I think I will try to duplicate them in some fused glass to include in my jewelry making.

This is my first big trip in the new trailer and as a life long camper and outdoor enthusiast, it feels as if I have finally surrendered to the lure “glamping,” aka glamor camping.  Not sure its glamorous, but certainly more comfortable.  I’m becoming more confident towing my 24′ home on wheels and feel a new sense of freedom.  My old trailer was a pop up tent trailer, very small and considerably more work to set up and take down.  Not sure I’m cut out for paved parking lots with hook ups, so I’ll seek a balance with plenty of dry camping in wilderness areas.

Let the Show Season Begin!

MonteVistaBoutique-small

I’m kicking off the 2013 Show Season with a  wonderful new event!  I heard about this fundraiser for Monte Vista Elementary School and learned that proceeds were going to go to art and technology classes for kids.  Well, in case you didn’t know, I have been a tech teacher for over 20 years and if I can sell jewelry to support kids with learning about art and tech, you know this boutique is for me!  I hope to have some new designs that include hearts in anticipation for Valentine’s Day gift giving.  I really love the new 22k gold overlay I’ve started to use and it has sold well so far.

The Yes Store to Open for the 44th Time

The longest running artist’s co-op in the country will open it’s doors for the 44th time on November 9, 2012 in downtown Santa Barbara.  Sweet Cedar Jewelry Design (that’s me!) will, for the third time, set up a booth to offer special handmade silver and bronze jewelry for the holiday gift giving season.  There is such a history with this store in Santa Barbara and for those of us who grew up here, the holiday season is not complete without a visit to the Yes Store.  As an art student in the 70′s I often thought about how cool it would be to participate in the store as an artist and now for the third year, I have been invited to join the store again.   We have returned to the 2010 location at 930 State Street, right next to the Apple store.  I’m looking forward to another joyful holiday season in the Yes Store.  Visit my Yes Store page for a list of this year’s artists! And “Like” us on Facebook!

Eastern Sierras Rejuvenation

Today I’m joyfully packing for a week of camping, fishing, resting, playing, exploring and rejuvenation in the Eastern Sierras.  Exactly what it is that pulls at my soul to spend time in this beautiful, natural place is not as clear to me as the sense of peace and wonderment that fills me up when I’m there.  The seven hour drive itself takes you through beautiful country and the hunt for the perfect campsite fills you with nervous anticipation.  Will luck be with us tomorrow and the perfect stream-side site be awaiting our arrival?  Will it have shade, a level floor for the trailer, privacy, and quiet that is only disturbed by the sounds of a rambling stream and friendly blue jays?  Let’s just say I’m feeling lucky. ;0)

After setting up camp and when I’ve landed a few trout for dinner, I hope to find inspiration for new jewelry designs in the tiny wonders that will be waiting patiently for my macro lens to capture them.  The beauty of metal clay is that it lends itself so wonderfully to natural shapes and form.  Tiny flower pedals can be sculpted, fern fronds can be pressed into a mold and small twigs can be duplicated in exquisite detail. Perhaps a new design series will emerge from this trip, the Sierras collection!  Now, slow down Barb, you need to pack the trailer first!

Cedar and Clover, my crazy, Labs are in their element in the mountains.  Noses to the ground, they demonstrate to us what unbridled joy looks like racing up and down the creek looking for the perfect stick to torture me with.  That lucky stick will be with us all week covered in dirt and teeth marks.  Hopefully it will not end up in my sleeping bag!

Outdoor Anniversary – Ojai Art in the Park 2012

My first year of participating in outdoor fine art shows has come and gone.  Ojai Art in the Park marked my first anniversary for setting up an open air store front to sell my jewelry.  Even though I’m new at this, it feels as if I’ve been doing it for years.  I guess because of the years I helped Mom with selling her plein aire oil paintings.  Sadly, she stopped showing a few years ago. I sure wish we had overlapped and done a few shows together, our booths side by side.  That would have been such fun!  She now comes to my shows to support me once in a while.  Funny how true it is about the apple not falling far from the tree!

The very next weekend I had my best show ever, Art Walk in Thousand Oaks.  It was the 25th anniversary of the show, and I had great sales and lots of wonderful comments about my work.  I also began to understand some of the strategies, attitudes and politics that lurk behind the scenes.  When applying, an artist is informed that they are expected to display work they made themselves and must be present in their booth all weekend.  At this show it was obvious to me that those requirements are more like loose guidelines.  There were factory made works in a number of displays and the absent artists were being represented by a sales person.  Even though the goods appeared to be handmade artistic creations, I was suspicious of a few booths.  It appeared to me and to some fellow artists, that the work was not made by one person’s hands.  I understand that it must be a difficult situation if show organizers don’t have enough qualified artists applying to the show.  They most likely have to loosen the requirements a bit to fill the spots, or could they really be that naive?  Probably a combination of both.  It does seem unfair to those of us who actually do make every piece of work we display because of the lower factory prices and larger selection.

I have also come to realize that I may also be the source of some ill will.  Because I do this outside of a regular full time job,  in the art community I apparently  fall into the “hobbyist” category.  There are artists who might feel a bit of resentment towards my participation in shows since they depend on their art sales to make a living and I represent competition for their sales.  Thankfully, the artists I’ve gotten to know have been very welcoming, genuine and generous with me, and I appreciate this even more now.  I can understand to a certain extent any negative feelings toward hobbyists and I might feel the same way if this was my sole source of  income.  But the reality is, there is inequity everywhere.  There are folks in every industry who don’t really need the money to survive, taking jobs away from folks who do.  Artists come from every walk of life and socioeconomic domain. Everyone should have the right to make and sell whatever they like.   But I think show organizers should hold the line when it comes to stated requirements about artists being present and selling their own handmade work.

Riches in Life

What makes you feel rich?  Well, clearly money makes people rich.  But is that the only measure of riches?  I think not!  I have had a wealth of wonderful experiences the past two months, therefore, no time to post to my blog!  But in the past ten weeks I have enjoyed the richness of life while trying to sleep through a heavy rainstorm while camping in the redwoods, communing for hours with delicate sea life at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, meeting new friends and having strong sales at the Calabasas Art Festival, spending quality time with a life-long friend over a spa weekend that I won in a raffle,  and enjoyed wildflowers and gourmet brunch with Mom on Mother’s Day.  I must say, I’m feeling a sense of richness these days.

With the close of the school year a couple of weeks away, I look forward to watching the kids at my school move on to the next chapter of their lives as students.  Reflecting on the moments with our youngest learners this year, I found richness in  their wide eyed innocence and their eagerness to try anything.  Their acceptance of me, and the laughs and learning we shared this year seem more valuable to me than years prior.

Ok, so what does any of this have to do with my art?  It’s all about observation and inspiration for me.  I loved the exhibit “The Secret Lives of Seahorses” at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and burned up at least 2 gigabytes on my camera memory card there!  Below is a photo of the lovely creature who inspired my seahorse pendant.

Delicate, beautiful, my muse.

Sea Glass Festival in Cayucos

Decided to spend the weekend in Morro Bay and check out the Cayucos Sea Glass Festival. We got to the festival site early, but there was already a line out the door and down the Cayucos pier! The place was packed! Note to self, start using more sea glass in your work! People really like this stuff!

It was not easy nudging, scooting, wedging, squeezing my way up to the tables and once in position in front of a table of glorious sea glass things, it was tough to get the sales persons attention! New note to self, start using more sea glass, TOMORROW! I am really surprised by how popular it is! So I’m heading back to the show early tomorrow in hopes of having more room to move and check out displays and buy some sea glass. I also hear there is a secret beach near here where sea glass is bountiful. Hhmmm, wonder how many others know about this “secret” beach!

Sea glass festival day two was so much better. We got a great parking spot and had plenty of elbow room to see everything we missed in the crowd the day before. There was a real range of creative ways artists incorporated sea glass into their work. Much of it was just beautiful. There was only one metal clay jeweler there and she had a ton of silver pieces with bezel set sea glass. She has tried firing sea glass with the clay, but had the same result I had; loss of color in the glass. I have read that firing in carbon, like I do with bronze clay, may help preserve the glass color. Half the fun of what I do is experimenting! I bought a bag of glass in beautiful hues of pale blue, frosty white, teal green and soft lime. Ideas are swimming around my brain with how I will incorporate it with the metal clay. Stay tuned for “Adventures in Sea Glass” coming soon!

Beach Show Debut!

Sweet Cedar Jewelry Design made its Santa Barbara Beach Show debut yesterday.  For forty seven years, artisans have been peddling their handmade wares every Sunday, year round, on beautiful Cabrillo Boulevard east of Stearns Wharf.  Like the Yes Store, it has been a fixture for those of us growing up in SB and to put it simply, it just felt like home.  I found a spot next to Yes Store friends Pamela and David Newman and was ready to open shop at 11am. The weather was beautiful, with puffy clouds, a light breeze and temps hovering at seventy.  I’m sure I will have to endure some not so beautiful days, but then again, nah! This is Santa Barbara!  Funny, how this little business venture of mine has renewed my love and appreciation for my home town.

Beach Show Debut

There are LOTS of jewelers at the Beach Show and competition is stiff, so I was thankful for the sales I made.  I think my work is different enough that it will be worthwhile for me.  I have not seen anyone else selling solely metal clay work or fine silver jewelry for dog lovers!  I did meet lots of dogs with their devoted people, and realized I forgot my complementary dog treats and water bowl for canine shoppers!

I was reluctant to join the show due to a required minimum attendance commitment I had heard about, but after learning that it averages out to only once a month, I realized I can handle that!  The best part is that I now have a regular place to sell my work and meet with customers right here in Santa Barbara.  Until mid April when there is a space assignment meeting, I will be trying different spaces as I can get them.  Apparently the best spots are close to the wharf, so next week I’ll see if there is an unused spot up that way.  Where ever I end up, I am very excited to be a part of this historic art show!  See you at the beach!

Glorious Glass!

I finally found a day to experiment with making my own glass cabochons.  Fusing the glass in a kiln is supposed to be a simple process, but  I read a number of differing sets of instructions about firing the glass.  Everyone seemed to have different firing schedules, so I decided to just go for it with the most simple one I found.  I made a few piles of “pizza glass” alternating clear layers with dichro layers, glass confetti and frit. I fired with a one hour ramp to 1,500 Fahrenheit, held it there for 10 minutes, opened the door to “set” the glass until it cooled to 1,000.  This little sneak peek of the glowing red, molten mounds of glorious glass built up anticipation of what I would find once I  let it cool to room temp.

I must admit, the hardest part of the whole process was resisting the temptation to open the kiln again before it was cool.  This takes HOURS!  They warn you that your class will probably crack if you do this.  Thankfully, a day at work kept me away and when I got home I was thrilled with what I found!  Sparkling, blues, greens, reds, oranges and purples in beautiful translucent mounds of glass!

LA Jewelry District Dipped in Chocolate

My first trip to the LA Jewelry District could not have been more wonderful unless it had been dipped in chocolate.  If you have never been there, it is worth a visit no matter if you are a jeweler, crafter, collector, gift giver or preparing to “pop the question.” The LA Jewelry District, has over 3000 of the world’s leading importers, manufacturers, designers and wholesalers of diamonds and diamond jewelry, gold jewelry, high end watches, silver jewelry, pearl jewelry, amber jewelry, jewelry engravers, suppliers, and precious gem dealers, all located on twelve blocks in the historic center of downtown Los Angeles.

My new pal Charlotte Barnard, a very talented fellow jeweler in Santa Barbara, was so incredibly generous to take an entire day to not only do the driving, but show this newbie around this exciting part of LA. She’s been selling her beautiful work for over ten years and took me to her favorite stores for findings, tools, display items, gems and supplies and we even visited a smelting company where I turned a bag full of sterling silver scraps into money.  I soon realized I pay too much for many of my materials and supplies.  I found amazing deals which I could not pass up on silver wire, bracelet displays, sterling chains and sparkling cubic z’s.

After a delicious lunch at Eatalian in Gardena, we visited Pacific Art Glass and I bought my first dichroic glass supplies.  Charlotte includes lamp work glass in her jewelry and picked up some supplies of her own. I doubt I will ever become a glass artist, but I do want to learn to create my own glass cabochons to include in my metal clay creations.

There are more trips to LA in my future, that’s for sure. Next time I’ll have a shopping list!

THANK YOU Charlotte for a spectacular day!

Dichroic Discovery!

A big part of the fun I have with jewel making is discovering new sources for my materials and supplies.  I’m always on the hunt in thrift shops, yard sales, antique malls, craft outlets and beading stores for precious discoveries.  During the last few hours of my time in Morro Bay while on a New Year’s weekend with friends, I discovered Paula Radke and her great little shop Beads Back on Main at 859 Main Street.  She is referred to as the Dichroic Queen of Morro Bay, a well deserved title!  I was in search of dichroic cabachons and was thrilled to be presented with bowls full of exactly what I was looking for!  Blues, greens, amber, purples, and red glitter filled my eyes as I sorted through hundreds of beautiful glass pieces!  Once my traveling companions saw me nose deep in glittering glass, they realized they they needed to arrange to meet up with me later!

On my list of new skills for 2012 is to learn the art of working with dichroic glass, but until then, I have a nice collection of cabs that are soon to be featured in my work, so stay tuned!

Until Next Year!

On Christmas Eve at 6pm, the doors to the 43rd annual Yes Store closed for another year. It was a beautiful store this year.  It was bright, spacious and had a great location in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara.  It was nice going in knowing a number of the artists this year after being a newbie last year.  I got to know a few of them better and reconnected with an old friend from ceramics classes at UCSB.   I was happy with the interest my work generated and sales were very good. Over half of the items I sold were from my dog lovers line of jewelry.  It seems most everyone knows a dog lover and it is almost certain that the dog lover in your life does not have a pair of fine silver dog paw earrings.

Since retail is so new to me, I am still learning how to display my work, what sells and what doesn’t sell for gift giving, and how to approach customers without coming off as  pushy or aggressive. Most people I spoke with during the few times I worked in the store were receptive to learning about metal clay and were surprised about how clay can become solid metal.  (It still seems like a bit of magic is at work with this stuff!) I’ve been told that retail is an art in itself and there is much research and advice out there to provide guidance. It might be worthwhile to do a little research of my own!

I woke up on Christmas morning and my first thoughts were about the smiles on the faces of people who received my jewelry as gifts from people who love them.  I secretly wished there was some way I could have been there to see the reaction of each recipient.  Just the thought of a little bit of joy my work creates will have to be enough.  Maybe I’ll be out and about one day and spot someone wearing my work.  I wonder if that happens, can I resist the temptation to introduce myself? Could be awkward!

So, for the second year my participation in the Yes Store added so much pleasure, fun and meaning to the Christmas season for me.  I have already started thinking about ways I can improve my display and what new designs I might add next year.  I know some day the novelty and joy from the store will probably wear off, but I hope not.  I am honored to have joined the ranks of Santa Barbara’s finest artists and craft persons and hope to be included again next year.

First Thursday at the Yes Store!

The first Thursday of each month, hundreds of art, wine, music and people lovers head to downtown Santa Barbara to go gallery hopping.  A dozen or more galleries display new collections of art work and serve up munchies and beverages to visitors.  At the Yes Store, this event only comes once a year on the first Thursday of December.  This year was a fun time for all with lots of wine and a great crowd of people.  I decided to capture the night in photos and am sharing some of my favorite photos below.  Enjoy!

Shadow Box Series

Rain Forest Tribe - Shadow Box Series

I have been trying to find a concept that I can develop into a series.  I think I found it with Shadow Box designs.  Dichroic glass fires beautifully with fine silver and I have a head full of ideas for pendants featuring shimmering glass cabochons.  I guess I’m going to have to learn to make my own dichroic glass cabs. Bummer, just more fun in store for me and my little kiln!

Sweet Cedar Sells Seashells by the Seashore

I’m having a great time working with dichroic glass cabochons and seashells.  These shells are from molds of real shells, many of which I found in Mexico and Santa Barbara.  I think I have finally found a new series to work on along with the Shadow Box series. These pieces will be available at the YES Store this year.

The YES Store!

The YES Store 2011 is coming!!! Opening night is Friday, November 18. Located this year at 740 State Street in Santa Barbara, the 43rd Annual YES Store will be bigger and better than ever!

Last year was my first time as one of the 47 artists showing and selling their work during the holidays in downtown Santa Barbara.  It was such a great experience and I’m trilled to be participating again this year.  The store is due to open the second week of November, exact date coming soon.

My booth - Yes Store 2010

Over the past year I have grown as an artist and learned so much about working with metal clay.  The addition of bronze to my work allowed me to take more risks and work on larger pieces.  I’m excited to be adding new designs including a new line of jewelry for cat lovers!

The YES Store first opened in the late 60′s and as a young art student I dreamed of  being included in the store.  Every year a visit to the store provided lots of inspiration and motivation to create art. It is an honor to now be included among the ranks of Santa Barbara finest artists and crafts people.

Celestial Order

The stars must have aligned for me this weekend.  Art Walk is one for the books, but will be long remembered as a special event where so much was right.  We were given Friday to set up and I was able to take a day off of work. It was such a joy to have so

Booth at Art Walk 2011

Sweet Cedar Booth - Art Walk 2011

much time to “play” with various booth layout ideas.  I loved my booth location, right near the entrance to the show up on a small terrace overlooking much of the show.  I had wonderful neighbors and I set my booth up so people would walk through, flanked by my work, to my neighbors wonderful animal wood sculptures display.

Saturday morning three judges came through with their clipboards checking things out, scrutinizing my display and examining my work.  What a special surprise it was to see that one of the judges was my high school jewelry teacher!  Even though there was a 30 year break between my jewelry making endeavors, I still consider her to have played such an important role in my current success.  About two hours after their visit, they approached me with a big purple ribbon!  I was an award winner!  I was selected to receive an Award of Merit, my first art award ever.  No surprise to anyone who knows me, I jumped up and down and squealed like a school girl.

My first award!

The weekend was full of friends, new and old, visitors were generous with their compliments about my work, and I received invitations to sell my work at some gift shops and a fund raiser.  Sales were decent, but mostly I enjoyed the relaxed and fun atmosphere, getting to know fellow artists and the beautiful setting.

Big League

This coming weekend will be my first experience showing my work at Art Walk, an annual fine arts show at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.  Mom showed at this event a few times and many of Santa Barbara’s most prominent and successful artists display their work at this show. This is a beautiful event with artists showing their work under the oak trees along the creek behind the Museum. There is also an indoor show where the most loved painters and sculptors in Santa Barbara hang only a few of their best pieces.  There is a reception Friday evening which I’m really looking forward to.  It feels a little like I’m a rookie who made it into the big league! Link to the Art Walk site

Bronze Bee Hive

Bronze Bee Hive

I’ve been very productive over the past two weekends in preparation for the show and have been working in both bronze and silver.  I like bronze because I can work bigger and take more risks. But results after a bronze firing can be mixed. In the same firing I can get a piece with a perfectly sintered, smooth surface and another piece with a rough surface that requires much more time in finishing.  Silver always comes out with consistent, smooth surfaces and is always easy to finish, but is almost ten times the cost for the metal clay.

My favorite piece from this weekend is the Bronze Bee Hive pendant on a gold plated large link chain.  The honeycomb texture came from a texture plate I made using baked polymer clay. The bee from balls of clay, rolled sheets for his wings and bronze wire for his antennae.  The honey drips were a last minute idea that I had as it was headed for the kiln.  I think they finish it with a little whimsey. My next one will have legs!  It was so much fun to make, I feel inspired to explore more hand sculpted creatures and see where it takes me.  I’m thinking a beetle or lizard will be next.  My favorite insect is the praying mantis, but I think that will be a challenge for down the road.

I’m really excited about this show!  Now I need to let friends know about it.  The marketing side of this little business is the hard part for many artists, including me.  It’s hard to “brag” about your work in order to sell it.  But the reality is, I enjoy the process of creating wearable art and especially enjoy watching someone light up when they find the right piece for themselves or for that perfect gift for someone they care about.  It really is the icing on the cake!

Karen's Pendant - Textured Bronze & Agate

Karen's Pendant - Textured Bronze & Agate

I met a very nice woman at the Whole Foods Artist Market earlier this month and she wanted to have me create a piece from a design she had in mind.  She’s a talented artist and her home is pretty much an art gallery, beautifully furnished and decorated.  We sat down together and she picked out a warm agate cabochon for the pendant.  The browns in it would go well with the textured bronze she wanted.

When I returned with her pendant a week later, she wasn’t 100% satisfied.  It was “off” just a little.  The bale was not perfectly centered and the stone just a little bit crooked.  She is an artist, has a critical eye and had high expectations!  So, I made some alterations, reset the stone and I admit, it was a much better piece.  I hope she enjoys wearing it as much as I enjoy becoming a better jeweler!

Earlier this year I participated in my first outdoor fine art show as an artist.  It was in Ojai on Memorial Day weekend and it could not have been a better experience for a newbie artist.  The weather was almost perfect, a little wind challenged me with downed displays a couple times, but the crowd was there to see and purchase art.  People were so kind and complementary of my work and sales covered my expenses many times over.

My Booth at Solstice Festival in Santa Barbara

A very different experience was the Summer Solstice Festival in June, downtown Santa Barbara.  Artists were in direct competition with vendors selling neon pink plastic butterflys and cheap imports.  After the flamboyant and colorfully creative Solstice parade, a beer garden, stage bands, mosh pits and funnel cake were the the main attractions.  This was not the show for work like mine.  Luckily I covered expenses and made some great local contacts if I decide to sell work in stores.  I did get a great corner location and I was pretty happy with my booth.

My mother on the other hand, is a talented painter and art show veteran.  Over the past fifteen years I accompanied her to many of her shows.  Now that she’s slowing down, she doesn’t do shows anymore, except for the annual Artist’s Studio Tour in her home.  Her work can be seen at www.marylafond.com  I am her number one fan and we love to critique each others work.

Poppy Pursuit - Mary Lafond, Oil on canvas board

She was recently chosen as one of the artists whose work will be gracing the walls of the newly expanded Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.  Fourteen of her paintings were chosen and some of them have already sold.  So she is working her tail off repainting some of them.  Not too many people like spending time in hospitals, so I love the idea of thousands of people over the years finding some comfort viewing Mom’s paintings.

Being new at running a small business, it’s rewarding when an idea for increasing sales pays off. At the Ojai show, dogs were welcome, so on the second day I put out a bowl of water and some doggie treats, right next to my dog theme jewelry display.  Sales of silver paws and dog bones doubled that day!  Woof!

Too Big a Bite?

This is such a busy time of year for me and what did I do? Signed up for two shows in September!  Am I nuts?  With the

Jungle Vibe Pendant

Jungle Vibe Pendant

start of the new school year and all the time consuming preparations it requires, I need to produce work to fill my display.  Oh, and in addition to the madness I will be on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean for a week with the seventh grade class in between the two shows. Let’s see if my ability to maintain some sanity has met its match!

But I must say I really like doing shows.  I’m sure one day they will become mundane and routine, but for now I enjoy cooking up ideas to tweak my display and creating new pieces to share with my adoring public. ;-)

Where a Couple of My Best Friends Meet

Special find on a beach in Mexico

Ok, post number two. Something about this website has me feeling a little giddy.  I’m using technology, which I have been professionally involved in for over 20 years and it’s about my art, specifically, my offline art.  Two realms where I find great comfort.  Like two very dear, long time friends of mine who meet each other for the first time.  Curious about WordPress for years now, I finally think I have a good reason to use it.  I created my first website  for the school where I work back in 1994 using html, and then used Netscape Navigator, Dreamweaver and now Word Press.  I have taught kids as young at 8 years old how to create websites using html and Dreamweaver.  A great creative outlet, but what the heck am I doing?  I don’t have time for this!  So I worry that it will be  time pit. I should be making jewelry!

Time For a Blog?

Swirls and Sparkle

Not sure what I’m getting myself into with starting a blog site.  What is compelling me to have a blog?  Do I even care if anyone reads it? With the millions of artist blogs out there, where will I fit in?  Some blogs I’ve seen seem to just be platforms for self indulgent, attention seeking people who just want to show off.   Is that what I’m doing?  Or could it be that as I get older I want to document my life experiences before I forget them?  It also may be that I feel excited about the direction my life has taken in the last year.  I seem to be experiencing a rebirth of the artist lurking within, and she is clawing her way to the surface and needs to be acknowledged publicly. Do I feel misunderstood and simply feel the need express myself?  Or do I want to document my journey back to the place I knew when I was young.  The place where I get to create beauty from clay, metal and stone.  I think a big part of this small space on the web is to give some meaning to what I’m now contributing to the art world. Well, I guess we’ll just see where this goes.  And really, anything goes!  So here’s a blogging joke I read yesterday.  Why did the blogger cross the road?  Because the wifi signal was stronger there. ;-)
